The Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED), through its consulting and research activity on the local territory, partially funded the construction of the new laboratory. The facility, completed in 2009, is conveniently close to the University sewage plant, now upgraded and operating as the new SEED Experimental Station. Both teaching and research are carried out in the building - in dedicated spaces. Five laboratory areas have been designed, in order to focus on the following aspects:
- Water and wastewater analysis
- Solid waste analysis
- Toxicological analysis
- Microbiology
- Odor metrology
- Olfactometric analysis
Over the last years, the centre has supported the development of numerous experimental plants at pilot and lab scale, as well as many B. Sc., M. Sc. and Ph. D. theses. Among the investigated innovative processes, special attention has been given to pollutants removal from water and wastewater (Fenton, PhotoFenton, sonolysis, membrane filtration, ozonation, Membrane BioReactors, biological denitrification, etc.), odor assessment and municipal solid waste management. The facility is equipped with full instrumentation to perform in situ monitoring activity.
